The Things That Never Change in a Season of Change

OPENING PRAYER:

Anchor me, Lord, in the unchanging truths of who You are and what You've called Your church to do. When everything around me shifts, help me hold fast to the mission You gave us and the authority of Your Word.

READ: Hebrews 13:8 (NLT)

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever." Hebrews 13:8 (NLT)

The writer of Hebrews penned this statement to Jewish believers facing intense pressure to abandon their faith in Christ and return to Judaism. In the midst of persecution, cultural change, and uncertainty, they needed to be reminded that while circumstances shift, Jesus remains constant. His character, His promises, and His mission don't waver with the times.

REFLECT:

When Pastor Rodney Elliott took the stage to address the church for the first time as the incoming lead pastor, he knew people were experiencing a range of emotions. Change—even good change—is unsettling. So before talking about anything that would be different, he did something wise: he named all the things that would never change.

The mission isn't changing: connecting people to Jesus and helping them become His fully devoted followers. The authority isn't changing: Scripture remains the foundation for how the church lives and makes decisions. And most importantly, the heart for people on the linoleum floor isn't changing—the passion to reach those who are lost, broken, and far from God. Rodney said, "That's the awesome thing about Pastor Carter staying and being the pastor of campus development—we get to tap into his wisdom. So many things that Todd brings that you only learn in 40 years of ministry we still have here."

What struck me about this moment was Rodney's pastoral sensitivity. He understood that when people hear about leadership transitions, their first question is often, "What's going to change? Is the church I love going to become something different?" And instead of dismissing that concern or getting defensive, he addressed it head-on by anchoring everyone in what's non-negotiable. The gospel doesn't change. The mission doesn't change. Jesus, as Hebrews tells us, doesn't change.

But here's what also matters: Rodney said that even as things stay the same, "I'm also excited about the new things that we're going to see God do in the future, because I think He's just getting started." The things that never change—the gospel, the mission, the authority of Scripture—actually free us to embrace the new things God wants to do. We don't have to fear change when we're anchored in what's unchanging. We don't have to cling to methods, programs, or comfort when we're grounded in the mission Jesus gave us. In your own life, when circumstances shift and uncertainty creeps in, come back to what never changes: Jesus is the same. His Word is true. His mission for your life stands. Everything else is secondary.

APPLY:

Identify one area of your life where you're experiencing change or uncertainty right now—a job transition, a relationship shift, a health challenge, a ministry change. Write down three unchanging truths about God that apply to that situation (His faithfulness, His sovereignty, His love, His promises). Memorize one of those truths this week, and speak it aloud whenever fear or anxiety about the change tries to take over.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will identify one specific assignment God has placed on my heart and take one concrete step toward it this week.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Jesus, thank You that You never change. When my circumstances shift and my emotions fluctuate, You remain the same—faithful, loving, sovereign, and good. Help me anchor my life in the unchanging truths of who You are and what You've called me to do. Give me courage to embrace the new things You want to do while holding fast to the mission You've given me. Amen.

PRAYER REQUEST:
