He Sees You Straining

OPENING PRAYER:

Jesus, thank You that nothing about my life is hidden from You. Meet me here, right where I am. Amen.

READ: Mark 6:47-48 (NIV)

Mark’s Gospel tells the same story of Jesus walking on the water and includes a detail that Matthew does not: Jesus was watching His disciples the whole time.

“Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake.” Mark 6:47-48 (NIV)

REFLECT:

From the middle of the lake, it must have felt like Jesus was a long way off. He was on the mountainside. They were in the dark, hour after hour, pulling against the wind. But as Pastor Todd reminded us, “Jesus might have been up on that mountainside, but He has eyes.” His eyes were on them the whole time.

Mark says Jesus saw them “straining at the oars.” He noticed their effort. He noticed their exhaustion. And He did not stay on the mountain. He went out to them. The God of the universe does not watch our struggles from a distance and leave us to figure it out on our own. He moves toward us.

If you are tired from rowing, hear this: Jesus sees you. He sees the effort no one else notices, the prayers you have whispered for years, and the weariness you carry quietly. He is with you, and He wants to help you. His invitation still stands: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

APPLY:

Find a quiet place and read Mark 6:48 slowly three times. The third time, replace “the disciples” with your own name. Then reach out to one trusted friend or someone in your group, tell them where you feel like you are straining, and ask them to pray with you.

I WILL STATEMENT:

“I will trust Jesus to take a step out of the boat.”

CLOSING PRAYER:

Lord, thank You for seeing me when I feel unseen and for moving toward me when I am worn out. Help me trust that You are near, and give me courage to step toward You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
