The Next Generation Is Watching
OPENING PRAYER:
Lord, thank you for the people who will come after me and are watching how I live more closely than I realize. Give me the courage to speak honestly and live differently, so that what I pass down is truth and not just silence.
READ: DEUTERONOMY 6:6-7 (NIV)
“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (NIV)
Moses gave this instruction to a generation about to raise children in a new land full of foreign gods and unfamiliar temptations, insisting that faith be spoken plainly, not left to assumption.
REFLECT:
Near the end of the message, Pastor Rodney Elliott said something that should sit with every parent, aunt, uncle, and mentor in the room: sportsbook companies are specifically targeting eighteen to twenty-four year olds, and he named his own twenty-year-old son as exhibit one. This wasn’t an abstract statistic to him. It was personal. He said we have to at least wrestle with this, speak truth to our kids about it, and understand there are people around us struggling with it who need someone to walk alongside them. That’s a very different call than simply avoiding gambling ourselves. It’s a call to be honest out loud with the next generation about something the culture is aggressively selling them as harmless fun.
Moses gave nearly identical instructions to Israel before they crossed into a land full of new gods and new temptations. He didn’t tell parents to simply model good behavior and hope it rubbed off. He told them to talk about it, at home, on the road, lying down, getting up, constantly and plainly. Silence was never the strategy God gave his people for facing a seductive culture. Rodney’s whole message, in a sense, was an act of that same instruction: naming the hook, naming the stats, naming the story of a man who lost almost everything, so that no one in that room could say they didn’t know what they were dealing with.
The moment at the end of the message, where people raised their hands committing to live differently and others prayed to follow Jesus for the first time, is what happens when this kind of honesty gets said out loud instead of assumed. Silence protects nothing. Honest words, spoken plainly and often, protect everything.
APPLY:
Have one honest, specific conversation this week with someone younger than you, a child, a niece or nephew, a student you mentor, about something the culture is selling as harmless that actually isn’t. Don’t lecture. Just tell the truth plainly, the way Rodney did.
I WILL STATEMENT:
“I will choose to honor God by choosing what is beneficial.”
CLOSING PRAYER:
God, thank you for entrusting me with people who are watching my life closer than I know. Give me the words and the courage to speak plainly instead of staying silent. Let my life and my honesty point the next generation toward the true freedom found only in you.
