The Urgency of Obedience
OPENING PRAYER:
Almighty God, stir within us the same urgency and unhesitating obedience that characterized the Ethiopian eunuch. Remove any excuses or delays that hinder us from taking immediate action when your Spirit prompts us, so that our lives reflect a vibrant, active faith.
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:19-20
This passage, known as the Great Commission, is Jesus' final instruction to his disciples before ascending to heaven. It’s a direct command for immediate, global action in sharing the gospel and making disciples, explicitly including baptism as a foundational step. This passage reinforces the sermon's call for immediate action, showing it's not just a suggestion but a core command from Jesus Himself.
REFLECT:
The sermon's call to "take immediate action," drawing from the eunuch's unhesitating response to the gospel, resonates deeply with Jesus' own commands. In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus doesn't suggest that His followers should consider making disciples or eventually baptize them. He issues a direct, urgent command: "Therefore go and make disciples... baptizing them..." This isn't a call to wait until we feel perfectly ready, have all the answers, or have our lives "cleaned up." Rather, it's a summons to step out in faith and obedience now, trusting that God will equip us as we go. The eunuch's story perfectly illustrates this principle. Once he understood, he didn't delay; he acted. This parallels Jesus' expectation that belief should immediately translate into obedient action, particularly in the foundational step of baptism, which serves as a public declaration of faith and a commitment to follow Him.
APPLY:
Think of one area where you are delaying obedience to a clear command from Jesus. Today, make a concrete plan to take the first step in that area, and share your plan with a trusted friend for accountability.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, we thank you for the clarity of your commands and the example of the eunuch. Forgive us for our tendency to delay obedience. Strengthen our resolve to "go" and "do" as you have commanded, taking immediate action to follow you wholeheartedly.
PRAYER REQUEST:
Share your prayer request and pray for others.
