Why My Brain Craves Connection

OPENING PRAYER:

Divine Architect, You have wonderfully made our minds with intricate designs. As we consider the balance of our thoughts and emotions, guide us to engage both the analytical and relational parts of our brains, especially in how we connect with You and others.

READ: Genesis 1:26-27 (NLT)

Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.” So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:26-27 (NLT)

This foundational passage underscores humanity's unique creation in God's image, emphasizing our design for relationship and dominion. It speaks to our inherent capacity for both logical thought and deep emotional connection, reflecting the multifaceted nature of our Creator.

REFLECT:

The message introduced the concept of hemispheric lateralization, explaining how our left brain handles "how-to" questions and analytical tasks, while our right brain grapples with "why" questions, mysteries, and, critically, relationships. The challenge presented is that modern technology, with its emphasis on information and problem-solving, keeps us predominantly in our left brain. This constant engagement with algorithms and predictable content means we often neglect our right brain, the very part designed for the complex, unpredictable, and deeply relational aspects of life. To counteract this, the message implicitly asks us to intentionally step away from the "solved problems" of technology and re-engage with the messiness of human interaction. This costs us convenience and the immediate gratification technology provides. It demands patience, vulnerability, and the willingness to lean into discomfort, because relationships, unlike equations, cannot be easily "solved." It requires us to cultivate boredom, to sit face-to-face, and look into someone's eyes, allowing our right brain to truly engage in the art of connection.

APPLY:

Invite a friend from your church community or coworker to join you for a meal or activity, prioritizing relationship over routine or convenience.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will create space to be face-to-face.

CLOSING PRAYER:

God, we thank You for the intricate design of our minds and our capacity for both logic and deep relationship. Grant us the discipline and courage to intentionally engage in relationships that challenge and enrich us, moving beyond the easy answers of technology to embrace the profound connections You desire for us.

PRAYER REQUEST:

Share your prayer request and pray for others.
