Residents, Not Visitors
OPENING PRAYER:
Father, you are the God who moves toward people. Quiet my heart and open my eyes to the places you have planted me. Teach me what it means to truly belong where you have sent me. Amen.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. - John 1:14 (NIV)
John opens his Gospel by describing the eternal Word of God taking on human flesh. The phrase “made his dwelling” carries the image of pitching a tent: the language of settling in, not passing through.
REFLECT:
Pastor Christian described what it is like to visit a school. You check in at the front office, slap on the visitor sticker with your photo on it, and the badge tells you exactly where you are allowed to go. Visitors often get to enjoy the fun parts: lunch with a student, a class party, a special event. But residents are the ones who show up on an ordinary Tuesday and carry the hard things nobody sees from the hallway.
Jesus did not visit humanity. He moved in. He knew the dust of Nazareth, the noise of crowded villages, and the weight of ordinary days. He went to weddings and funerals, sat at tables with outsiders, and stayed long enough to know people by name. The incarnation is God’s answer to whether he would be a visitor or a resident in our broken world.
That is the posture Pathway wants to take toward our schools. Not dropping in only when it is convenient, but committing to the long, unglamorous work of showing up. Residents know the problems because they live alongside them. Residents care because the place is theirs. God has placed you in a neighborhood, near a school, among people who need to see what grace looks like when it stays.
APPLY:
Think of a school near your home, the one your kids or grandkids attend, or one you pass every day. Are you a visitor or a resident there? Write down one ordinary, repeatable way you could show up, such as a monthly note to a teacher, a standing volunteer hour, or simply learning the names of the people who work there.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will pray for one school by name and encourage one person in it this week.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Jesus, thank you for making your dwelling among us. Make me a resident of the places you have given me, not a tourist. Show me the people I have walked past, and give me the patience and love to stay. Amen.
