Citizens of a Different Kingdom

OPENING PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, remind me that my true citizenship is not tied to any flag or political party but to Your eternal kingdom. Anchor my identity in Christ alone, and free me from the fear and division that earthly politics can bring.

READ: Philippians 3:20 (NIV)

"But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ."

Paul wrote these words to the church in Philippi, a Roman colony where citizenship was a source of immense pride and privilege. To tell Roman citizens that their true citizenship was elsewhere was countercultural and even dangerous—it challenged the ultimate authority of Rome. Philippians 3:20 (NIV)

REFLECT:

One of the most powerful moments in the message came when Pastor Todd Carter declared that if we follow Jesus, no matter where we live, we're expatriates. Our primary identity isn't American, Canadian, or any other nationality—it's citizen of heaven. He illustrated this with a striking example: a woman in Turkana, Kenya, who follows Jesus is more like him than the man down the street who looks like him, shares his politics, but curses God. This isn't about diminishing love for country; it's about properly ordering our loves.

Todd emphasized that the future of God's kingdom doesn't depend on the future of any nation. Jesus will not be the mascot for any political party or country. He told Pilate, "My kingdom is not of this world." This truth should radically reshape how we engage with politics. We don't have to fear political outcomes because no election, law, or policy can affect our eternal destiny or derail God's mission. Our government will never fix our deepest problems—only Jesus' leadership in individual lives can do that. When we grasp this, we're freed from the anxiety, anger, and tribalism that characterize so much political engagement. We can participate without being consumed. We can advocate without demonizing. We can disagree without dividing. Because at the end of the day, we're not fighting for a political kingdom that will pass away—we're ambassadors of an eternal kingdom that cannot be shaken.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will confess and turn away from making politics more important than God's mission.

The next time you feel anxious or angry about a political development, pause and ask yourself: "Am I responding as a citizen of heaven or as someone whose hope is tied to earthly outcomes?" Write down Philippians 3:20 and place it somewhere you'll see it when you're tempted to engage in divisive political conversations.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Lord Jesus, thank You that my security doesn't rest in who holds political power but in who holds the universe. Help me live as a citizen of heaven—engaged but not enslaved, concerned but not consumed, passionate but not divisive. Let my life point people to Your kingdom above all others.

PRAYER REQUEST:
