Overestimating Ourselves

OPENING PRAYER:

Lord, strip away my false confidence and help me see my true vulnerability. Teach me the humility that leads to dependence on You rather than my own strength.

READ: 1 Peter 5:8 (NIV)

"Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."

Peter wrote this letter to Christians facing persecution, drawing on his own painful experience of overestimating his loyalty to Jesus and denying Him three times. His warning about the devil comes from someone who learned the hard way that spiritual confidence without vigilance leads to devastating failure. 1 Peter 5:8 (NIV)

REFLECT:

Pastor Todd Carter shared a fascinating statistic: 65% of Americans believe they are more intelligent than the average person, but studies show only 2% actually are. We have an enormous tendency to overestimate ourselves, our intelligence, our morality, our ability to resist temptation. And this overconfidence is exactly what makes us vulnerable.

He then told the story of Bill Hybels, one of the most influential pastors in America over the last forty years. Todd knew Bill personally, had traveled to Chicago to meet with him, had even interviewed him in Wichita. He had tremendous respect for Bill's spiritual life, his leadership, and his impact on the kingdom of God. But in 2018, allegations came out about inappropriate behavior with women, and it was like a bomb went off. Todd said people everywhere were asking, "How did that happen?" Because if someone as smart and spiritual as Bill Hybels could fall into temptation and have it derail his life, maybe we're all more vulnerable than we think.

This is the sobering reality: we are not immune to sin. We have a real adversary whose mission is to steal, kill, and destroy. Todd emphasized that Satan isn't a passive spectator waiting for us to trip up, he's actively pursuing us, prowling around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. And one of his most effective strategies is luring us away subtly and slowly with our own desires. He doesn't need to hit us with a frontal assault when he can simply get us to lower our guard, to think we're strong enough to handle it, to believe we're the exception. Todd shared example after example of people he's counseled over the years, men who never intended to have an affair but put themselves in close proximity with a woman, crossed emotional boundaries, and one day found themselves in an affair that blew up their marriage. People who never thought they'd have a drug problem, a gambling problem, a shopping problem, but one day found themselves trapped because they overestimated their ability to resist. This is why Jesus doesn't teach us to pray, "Help me overcome evil by my own willpower." He teaches us to pray a prayer of dependence and humility: "Help me not to yield to temptation but rescue me from evil."

The question we need to ask ourselves is brutally honest: What temptation am I vulnerable to? What am I overconfident about? Where do I need to stop trusting my own strength and start crying out for God's deliverance? Because the moment we think we're strong enough on our own is the moment we're most in danger.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will pray the Lord's Prayer daily this week. Remember, if you missed a day, that's okay. God isn't keeping score; He's simply inviting you into daily conversation with Him. The real win is that prayer is becoming more natural, more central to how you navigate life. And if you need help maintaining this rhythm, check out the Daily Devotional in the Pathway app. It's a great resource to guide your prayer time each day. You can even have it delivered to your email inbox. The goal is to discover that daily time with God changes everything. Keep going!

CLOSING PRAYER:

Jesus, I confess that I've been overconfident in my own strength. I need You more than I've been willing to admit. Deliver me from the pride that makes me vulnerable and teach me to depend on You completely. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
