Staying Alert on Mission
OPENING PRAYER:
Father, awaken me to the mission You've given me. Don't let me be distracted, detracted, or lured away from what You've called me to do. Keep me alert and focused on Your kingdom purposes.
"Plan carefully what you do, and all your ways will be sure. Do not turn to the right or to the left; keep your foot from evil."
The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom sayings designed to teach young people how to live skillfully and avoid the pitfalls that destroy lives. This particular passage emphasizes the importance of intentionality and planning, wisdom isn't just about knowing what's right, but about deliberately choosing paths that keep us away from evil.
Proverbs 4:25-27 (NIV)
REFLECT:
At the end of the message, Pastor Todd Carter's voice carried a sense of urgency that I don't want us to miss. He said, "God has such a big mission for us personally and really such a big mission for us as a church family. And we cannot, friends, we cannot be distracted, detracted, or lured away. What we are doing is too important." This wasn't just a nice closing thought, it was a battle cry, a reminder that we're in the middle of something that matters eternally.
Todd has been emphasizing throughout this series that Pathway Church has a ten-year vision, and he's been calling the church to pray for it consistently. He reintroduced the digital prayer wall in the Pathway app, where people can post prayer requests and pray for each other and for the ministry happening through the church. He gave specific examples, prayer requests for the Valley Center campus, for micro campuses, for a nine-month-old girl named Annabelle who's having surgery for fluid on the brain. His point was clear: we have this incredible untapped resource of prayer that we need to be leveraging toward each other and toward the mission God has given us.
But here's what ties everything together: staying alert to temptation isn't just about personal holiness. It's about staying on mission. Todd emphasized that a keyway God delivers us from temptation and provides a way out is to decide in advance to avoid it. Proverbs says, "Plan carefully what you do, then all your ways will be sure. Do not turn to the right or to the left. Keep your foot from evil." This is about putting up appropriate boundaries in our lives to keep us from sin, because we are all vulnerable.
When we fall to temptation, when we let good things crowd out God things, when we try to fight battles alone instead of relying on God and His family, we're not just hurting ourselves. We're compromising the mission. We're taking ourselves out of the game.
We're taking ourselves out of the game. The enemy doesn't need to destroy us with some dramatic moral failure if he can simply distract us enough that we're no longer effective for the kingdom. That's why Todd said we way overestimate our ability to deal with temptation, because we don't realize how much is at stake.
Pastor Carter's challenge to pray the Lord's Prayer daily isn't just about personal spiritual growth. It's about keeping ourselves aligned with God's mission, staying alert to the enemy's schemes, and relying on God's power to deliver us so we can be used for His purposes. When we pray "lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil," we're asking God to keep us on track, to protect us from anything that would derail us from what He's called us to do. And when we pray for each other, for Annabelle's surgery, for new campuses, for people struggling with addiction or broken marriages or financial crisis, we're leveraging the power of prayer toward the mission God has given us as a family.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will pray the Lord's Prayer daily this week. Remember, if you missed a day, that's okay. God isn't keeping score; He's simply inviting you into daily conversation with Him. The real win is that prayer is becoming more natural, more central to how you navigate life. And if you need help maintaining this rhythm, check out the Daily Devotional in the Pathway app. It's a great resource to guide your prayer time each day. You can even have it delivered to your email inbox. The goal is to discover that daily time with God changes everything. Keep going!
CLOSING PRAYER:
Father, thank You for the mission You've entrusted to me and to my church family. Keep me alert, keep me focused, and keep me dependent on You. Use my life for Your kingdom and Your glory, and don't let the enemy distract me from what really matters. Amen.
