“Comfort or Calling? When Stress Invites Us to Bear Fruit”

OPENING PRAYER:

Holy Spirit, awaken us to Your call in the midst of our discomfort. Teach us to seek Your purpose rather than our escape.

READ: John 15:2 (NIV)

He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. John 15:2 (NIV)

Jesus is preparing His disciples for the reality that following Him will require change—sometimes painful, always purposeful.

REFLECT:

Rodney shared a powerful insight from an agricultural expert: when plants are stressed, they focus all their energy on producing fruit. Yet when people are stressed, we tend to seek comfort—ice cream after a bad day, endless scrolling, or numbing entertainment. He vulnerably admitted his own habits, challenging us to reflect on ours.

But Jesus’ words in John 15 are a summons to something more. God designed creation so that stress triggers fruitfulness in plants. Could it be that our discomfort is an invitation to move beyond self-soothing and into purposeful living? When hardship comes, do we retreat, or do we ask God how we might serve, love, and grow?

What if the very things you want to escape are the soil in which God wants to grow fruit? Stress, in God’s hands, can become a catalyst for spiritual reproduction and deeper impact.

APPLY:

Next time you feel the pull toward comfort in a stressful moment, pause and ask God to show you a way to serve or encourage someone instead.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will take one concrete step towards serving, or I will invite someone to serve with me.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Thank You, Lord, for meeting us in our discomfort. Redirect our instincts so that even our pain becomes an open door for Your fruit to grow.

PRAYER REQUEST:

Share your prayer request and pray for others.

This weekend, we talked about taking the next step—and sometimes that step is simply getting started. If you've never served at Pathway, or if it's been a while, we'd love to help you find your place. Just open the Pathway App, tap Get Involved, or visit the website at pathwaychurch.com/volunteer to explore where you could jump in. And if you're already serving, here's your challenge this week: invite someone to serve alongside you. Some of the greatest growth happens when we serve together, so don't keep that opportunity to yourself!
