Remaining in the True Vine

OPENING PRAYER:

Holy Spirit, quiet the restless longing in my heart that keeps reaching for things that were never meant to satisfy. Help me see clearly what I've been chasing and turn my gaze toward the One who alone can fill the deepest hunger of my soul.

READ: John 15:1

"I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener." — John 15:1 (NIV)

Jesus spoke these words while walking with his disciples toward the Garden of Gethsemane on the night before his crucifixion. They were passing vineyards in the cool evening air—vineyards that were essential to first-century life, since wine was the safe drink when water was often contaminated. Jesus, the master teacher, seized this ordinary moment to reveal an extraordinary truth about the source of all life.

REFLECT:

Pastor Todd Carter shared something vulnerable and honest from his recent study break: standing in the mountain air of Colorado, surrounded by family, celebrating his daughter's pregnancy announcement mid-flight in a hot air balloon, he felt that familiar whisper—"This is it. This is the life I've been looking for." But even in that beautiful moment, he recognized a truth we all face: perpetual vacation won't fill your soul. Whatever good feeling comes from any earthly experience will eventually fade, even if we could somehow stay in it forever.

This is the core struggle of being human. We keep reaching for imitation vines—a relationship that will finally complete us, a promotion that will prove our worth, a political candidate who will fix what's broken in our world, an experience that will permanently satisfy. And these things aren't bad. They're often good gifts. But when we ask them to be the vine instead of a branch, when we expect them to be the source of life instead of an expression of it, we set ourselves up for the slow crawl toward disappointment. Jesus doesn't condemn our longing for more—he affirms it. We were made for more. But that "more" isn't found in endlessly chasing temporary things. It's found in connecting to the true vine, the only source that never runs dry.

APPLY:

This weekend, we talked about taking the next step—and sometimes that step is simply getting started. If you've never served at Pathway, or if it's been a while, we'd love to help you find your place. Just open the Pathway App, tap Get Involved, or visit the website at pathwaychurch.com/volunteer to explore where you could jump in. And if you're already serving, here's your challenge this week: invite someone to serve alongside you. Some of the greatest growth happens when we serve together, so don't keep that opportunity to yourself!

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will take one concrete step towards serving or I will invite someone to serve with me.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Jesus, forgive me for the ways I've asked good things to do what only you can do. Thank you for being the true vine, the real source of everything my soul needs. Teach me to receive your gifts with gratitude while keeping my roots deep in you alone.

PRAYER REQUEST:

Share your prayer request and pray for others.
