The Long Obedience
OPENING PRAYER:
Patient Father, You work transformation over lifetimes, not moments. Give me grace to trust the slow work of healing and the courage to remain faithful even when I don't see immediate results.
"Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me." Psalm 23:4 (NIV)
David wrote this beloved psalm likely reflecting on his years as a shepherd and his experience of God's protection through danger. The imagery isn't of God removing the valley but of God's presence sustaining us as we walk through it. The psalm acknowledges the reality of darkness while affirming the certainty of divine companionship.
REFLECT:
Near the end of the message, Pastor Rodney Elliott said something that might have disappointed some listeners hoping for a quick fix: "My anxiety's still there. Did I mention that?" Even after implementing everything his counselor suggested, regular worship, joining a group, daily time with God, the anxiety didn't vanish. But here's what changed: there's more certainty now. Some of those weights of uncertainty have shifted back to the certainty side. He can cope. He can manage. He has people around him and a God he worships who is certain.
This is the honest reality of discipleship that doesn't get talked about enough. We want transformation to be instant, pray once, go to church once, read the Bible once, and be healed. But Rodney's journey reveals a different truth: feeling better takes time, but we want it now. God doesn't promise to take anxiety away immediately. What He promises is His presence through the valley. Rodney admitted he's not where he was, but he's also not where he wants to be. He's in the middle of the journey, and that's okay. The rhythms of certainty he built, showing up to worship God (not just attending church but actually engaging), hosting a group regularly where he met people who encouraged him, starting his mornings in the Pathway Church app with daily devotions instead of scrolling, these didn't fix everything. But they gave him what he needed to keep walking. And over time, faithfulness in these rhythms allows God to do amazing things. This obedience is not dramatic, not flashy, just faithful presence before God and His people, week after week, morning after morning.

God's Word offers hope and insight into the topic of mental health, and we, as followers of Jesus, can be hope bearers as well.
APPLY:
Reflect on your week of walking through this devotional. What one rhythm of certainty have you begun to build? Commit to continuing it for the next 30 days, not as a test to see if it "works" but as an act of faithfulness to the God who walks with you through valleys. Write yourself a letter describing where you are right now in your journey with anxiety, seal it, and open it in three months. Notice what God does over time when you remain faithful to the rhythms that anchor you in His certainty.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will build my weekly rhythm of certainty.
CLOSING PRAYER:
God of the valley and the mountaintop, thank You for not abandoning me in my anxiety but walking beside me through it. Give me patience with the process of healing and transformation. Help me to trust that faithfulness over time, even when I don't see immediate results, is never wasted in Your economy. I surrender my timeline to Yours and ask for grace to keep showing up, keep seeking You, keep gathering with Your people. You are certain, and that is enough.
