The Seat of Conviction

OPENING PRAYER:

Spirit of God, open our hearts to recognize the moments when we feel your drawing, yet hesitate. Help us to honestly examine the gap between what we believe and what we actually do, especially when it comes to responding to your call.

READ: Acts 8:26

"Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, 'Go south to the road, the desert road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.'"

Context: This verse marks the divine initiation of Philip's journey, leading him to an encounter that perfectly illustrates immediate obedience. It's significant because Philip's action, prompted by God, sets the stage for the eunuch's own swift response to faith.

REFLECT:

Pastor Todd Carter shared a deeply personal memory, recalling a time when he felt God's Holy Spirit tugging on his heart, drawing him closer. He had a clear conviction, a genuine belief in what he heard. Yet, when the moment arrived to act on that conviction—to follow Jesus and be baptized—he "stayed in his seat." This wasn't a lack of belief, but a failure to translate that belief into an outward step. Many of us can relate to this experience. We hear a truth, we feel a prompting, we know what we should do, but we remain in our spiritual seats, comfortable in our intentions rather than courageous in our actions. That gap, between knowing and doing, can become a place where important spiritual growth stalls. It's a reminder that conviction, however strong, needs a corresponding step of faith to truly transform our lives.

APPLY:

Reflect on a recent moment when you felt a clear spiritual prompting or conviction but hesitated to act. Identify what held you back and share that experience with a trusted friend or mentor, asking them to pray for your courage to act next time.
