The Divine Appointment

OPENING PRAYER:

Holy Spirit, open my eyes to see the divine appointments You've orchestrated in my life. Help me recognize that nothing about my story, even the parts I'd rather forget, is accidental in Your hands. Meet me here, just as Jesus met the woman at the well.

READ: John 4:4 (NIV)

"Now he had to go through Samaria."

This single word, "had", carries profound weight. Jesus didn't accidentally wander into Samaria. The route through Samaria was actually the one most Jews deliberately avoided, adding days to their journey to circumvent this region of "unclean" people. Yet scripture says Jesus had to go there. This wasn't geographical necessity; it was divine mission. The Good Shepherd was leaving the ninety-nine to find the one.

REFLECT:

In Pastor Carter’s message, we heard how Jesus made this journey specifically to meet one woman, someone hiding in shame, coming to the well alone at noon to avoid the condemning eyes of her community. She had five failed marriages behind her and was living with a man who wasn't her husband. By every religious and cultural standard of that day, she was disqualified, unclean, unreachable. Yet Jesus had to meet her.

Think about what this means for your life right now. The places you feel most ashamed, most broken, most convinced that you're beyond reach, those are exactly the places Jesus is walking toward. He's not waiting for you to clean yourself up first. He's not requiring you to earn the right to His presence. Todd reminded us that Jesus offers relationship, not religion. He doesn't come with a checklist of things you need to fix before He'll show up. He comes to you in the middle of your mess, in the heat of your shame, when you're hiding from everyone else. That word "had" in the scripture tells us that meeting you, knowing you, transforming you, this is not Plan B for Jesus. You are the mission. Your encounter with Him is a divine appointment, not a happy accident.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will stop disqualifying myself and start engaging in God's mission.

Reflect on one area of your life where you've been hiding or avoiding God because of shame. Write it down honestly. Then write these words over it: "Jesus had to meet me here." This week, instead of trying to fix yourself before approaching God, bring that broken place directly to Him in prayer. Let Him meet you there.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Jesus, thank You that my brokenness doesn't disqualify me from Your presence; it's actually what draws You near. Help me stop hiding and start receiving the living water You offer. I surrender my shame to You and trust that You have come specifically for me. Amen.
