Group Discussion Guide

Sermon Series: Confused
Sermon Title: A.I. – Artificial Intelligence
Speaker: Christian Hallberg
Scripture: Genesis 1:26-27, Genesis 2, Hebrews 10:24-25

Icebreaker

Question:
What’s one piece of technology (past or present) that you can’t imagine living without, and what’s one way technology has made your life better—or more complicated?

  • Follow-up: Has there ever been a moment when you realized technology was actually making you feel more disconnected rather than connected?

Opening Connection

Begin with a Check-In:

  • Share briefly: Where did you see God at work in your life this week—especially in your relationships or in how you used technology?

Discussion

1. Imago Dei & What Makes Us Human

Context:
The message began by highlighting how artificial intelligence is blurring the lines between what feels real and what is truly human. It rooted our identity in Genesis 1:26-27, emphasizing that we are made in the image of God—uniquely created for relationship with Him and with one another.

Read Genesis 1:26-27 together.

Discussion Question:

  • What does it mean to you personally that you are made in the image of God?
    • Life Application: How does recognizing the Imago Dei in yourself—and in others—shape the way you approach relationships, especially in a world where technology can distract or disconnect us?

2. The Limits of Technology & The Need for Community

Context:
The message underscored: “Technology can connect devices, but it cannot connect souls.” While A.I. and devices are helpful, they cannot replace the deep, face-to-face connections God designed us for (see Genesis 2:18).

Read Genesis 2:18.

Discussion Question:

  • In what ways have you experienced technology either helping or hindering your sense of genuine connection with others?
    • Life Application: Where might you need to set boundaries with technology to make room for authentic, soul-level relationships? Share one area you’d like to grow in.

3. The Church’s Calling in an Artificial Age

Context:
The message called out the “relational poverty” in our culture and in churches, reminding us that while there is an abundance of teaching online, what’s missing is real, embodied community. Hebrews 10:24-25 was highlighted as a call to gather, encourage, and motivate one another toward love and good works.

Read Hebrews 10:24-25.

Discussion Question:

  • Why do you think the author of Hebrews urges believers not to give up meeting together?
    • Life Application: What are barriers in your life to prioritizing face-to-face Christian community? How can you take a concrete step this week to move toward more consistent, meaningful gathering?

4. Practicing Presence: No-Tech Times & Reaching Out

Context:
The message offered practical guidance: create “no-tech times and no-tech zones” (like at the dinner table or before bed), and intentionally reach out to those who might be isolated or lonely.

Discussion Question:

  • What is one “no-tech” time or zone you could try this week to create more space for relationships?
    • Life Application: Who is someone God might be nudging you to reconnect with or encourage in person this week? How will you follow through?

5. Small Groups & Opening Circles

Context:
The message encouraged everyone to join a small group for deeper community and challenged leaders to be open to including new people.

Discussion Question:

  • In a small group, what helps you feel known and valued? If you’re not in a small group, what would help you take a next step toward that deeper connection of community?
    • Life Application: As a group, brainstorm one way you can be more welcoming to those who may be on the outside looking in.

I Will Statement

“I will create space to be face-to-face.”

Reflection:

  • What is one specific way you will create space this week for face-to-face connection—with God, with your family, or with another person in your community?

Prayer Prompts

Invite your group into a time of guided, reflective prayer:

  • Ask the group for any specific prayer requests or praises this week.
  • Thank God for creating us in His image and for His desire for relationship with us.
  • Confess any tendency to prioritize screens or convenience over real connection, asking for God’s help to set wise boundaries with technology.
  • Pray for courage and intentionality to reach out to those who are lonely or isolated, and for eyes to see opportunities to be the “hands and feet of Jesus.”
  • Ask God to strengthen your group’s love and unity, and to help you open your circle to include others who need community.
  • Lift up anyone in your group, church, or circles who is struggling with loneliness, asking God to meet them through the presence of His people.
  • Pray for your church to embody “flesh-and-blood” love in an increasingly artificial world, being a place where souls are truly connected to God and to one another.
  • Invite the Holy Spirit to guide each group member this week as they seek to “create space to be face to face.”

(Allow space for silent prayer, personal requests, and listening for God’s leading.)
