Message Series: Made For More

Message Title: We Are Made For Health, Not Comfort

Short Summary: In this message, we explore Jesus’ teaching from John 15 about being connected to the true vine and living a life that bears fruit. Rather than seeking comfort or self-focus in times of stress, Jesus calls us to embrace pruning and become fruitful for God’s glory. Fruitfulness is evidence of genuine connection to Christ, and it shows up not only in our lives but in the lives of others as we serve and invite them into God’s mission.

Icebreaker Question

If you were a plant, what kind would you be, and why?
(Lighthearted, but also connects to the message’s vineyard imagery and the idea of growth and fruitfulness.)

Review of Last Week’s "I Will" Statement

Last Week’s "I Will" Statement:
I will take one concrete step towards serving, or I will invite someone to serve with me.

Reflection Questions:

  • Did you take a step to serve or invite someone to serve with you this past week? What did you do, and what was that experience like?
  • If you didn’t, what held you back? How did you sense God prompting you, even if you didn’t act yet?

Tip for Leaders:
Before each question, you might consider reading the related quote or story from the sermon (even paraphrased) to give context - helping your group “re-enter” the message and connect their stories to what was preached.

Discussion Questions

1. The Stress Response: Plants vs. People
In the message, Pastor Rodney shared about how, when plants experience stress, their “hardwired” response is to produce fruit as quickly as possible, whereas people often seek comfort—like ice cream or distraction. He asked us to consider: “How do you handle stress and discomfort?”

  • When you think back on your own response to stress, do you relate more to reaching for comfort or moving toward fruitfulness?
  • Can you recall a recent situation where you chose comfort over growth—or the other way around? What happened, and what does this reveal about your connection to Jesus?

2. Examining Your Fruit
The message invited us to “examine what you produce” and used corn from Pastor Rodney’s own field as an illustration—some fruitful, some scrawny, but each telling a story. He challenged us: “Every stalk is needed for a good crop. Every person must bear fruit.”

  • What kind of spiritual “fruit” do you see in your life right now?
  • Are there areas that feel “scrawny” or underdeveloped? How does it feel to recognize that, and what do you think God might be saying to you about it?

3. Pruning as Preparation, Not Punishment
The message explored Jesus’ words in John 15—that God the Gardener prunes fruitful branches so they’ll be even more fruitful. Pastor Rodney admitted that “embracing hard things isn’t what I think of first—I think vanilla milkshakes.”

  • When have you experienced a “pruning” season—where God allowed something to be cut away?
  • How did you respond at the time, and how do you see its purpose looking back?
  • What might it look like to “embrace pruning” as a way God prepares you for more?

4. Reproducing Fruit in Others
Pastor Rodney shared a story of reconnecting with someone who used to attend Pathway, and thanking a leader who had poured into them years ago—showing how fruit is “reproduced in others.” He said, “Fruit is evidence that we are connected to Him.”

  • Who has helped reproduce spiritual fruit in your life?
  • Are you currently investing in someone else (serving, mentoring, inviting)? What impact have you seen, or what would you hope for?

5. For God’s Glory, Not Just Our Good
The message emphasized that fruitfulness is “to my Father’s glory” (John 15:8), not just about feeling good or checking a religious box. Pastor Rodney said, “We produce for the glory of God so that people will see God through our lives.”

  • In your current serving or daily life, how do you keep your focus on God’s glory, rather than just what you get out of it?
  • What helps you remember that your life is meant to point others to Jesus?

This Week’s "I Will" Statement

I will take one concrete step towards serving, or I will invite someone to serve with me.

This weekend, we talked about taking the next step—and sometimes that step is simply getting started. If you've never served at Pathway, or if it's been a while, we'd love to help you find your place. Just open the Pathway App, tap Get Involved, or visit the website at pathwaychurch.com/volunteer to explore where you could jump in.  And if you're already serving, here's your challenge this week: invite someone to serve alongside you. Some of the greatest growth happens when we serve together, so don't keep that opportunity to yourself!

Prayer Prompts

  • Ask for prayer requests:
What’s on your heart or mind this week? How can the group pray for you personally?
  • Pray for courage and openness:
Pray for the courage to embrace pruning and discomfort for the sake of spiritual growth, not just seeking comfort.
  • Pray for fruitfulness and authentic service:
Ask God to help each group member bear real spiritual fruit and to serve or invite others with humility and for God’s glory.
