Is It Really "All In"?

OPENING PRAYER:

God of complete devotion, as we ponder the call to "take the plunge" and give you our all, search our hearts. Reveal any areas we are still holding back, and ignite in us a desire for wholehearted surrender, understanding that you desire everything we are.

READ: Matthew 3:13-17

"Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, 'I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?' Jesus replied, 'Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.' Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, 'This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.'" Matthew 3:13-17

This passage describes Jesus' own baptism by John the Baptist. Even though Jesus was without sin, He chose to be baptized "to fulfill all righteousness," setting an example of obedience and identifying with humanity. This public act marked the beginning of His public ministry and was affirmed by God the Father and the Holy Spirit, demonstrating the significance of this act of surrender.

REFLECT:

The sermon challenges us with the powerful phrase, "Take the plunge," asserting that God desires "all of us, everything we've got, everything that we are." This raises a critical question for each of us: Is it really "all in"? Do we truly understand what "all in" means for our lives, beyond just Sundays or a portion of our resources? When we say we follow Jesus, are we reserving parts of our week, our finances, our relationships, or our ambitions for ourselves? The pastor explicitly states that God wants "not only my weekends, he's got my Sundays and my Saturdays... He's got our whole portfolio. He's got everything." This means a complete surrender of our entire existence to His Lordship. Where are we still holding back? What areas of our lives have we not yet fully entrusted to Him? This call to "take the plunge" is a call to examine our hearts and ensure our commitment is truly comprehensive.

APPLY:

Prayerfully consider one specific area of your life that you have been holding back from God, perhaps your time, finances, or a particular relationship. Today, take a concrete step to surrender that area fully to Him.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Holy God, we acknowledge your right to every part of our lives. Help us to truly "take the plunge" of full surrender, holding nothing back. May our lives be an authentic reflection of an "all in" commitment to you, our loving Lord.
