The Mission After the Plunge

OPENING PRAYER:

Empowering Spirit, as we consider the mission that follows our commitment to Jesus, ignite in us a passion for the good works you have prepared. Help us to see baptism not as an end, but as a starting line for a life lived with purpose for your Kingdom.

READ: Ephesians 2:10

"For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Ephesians 2:10

The Apostle Paul, writing to the church in Ephesus, emphasizes that believers are God's deliberate creation, not merely saved from something, but saved for something. This "something" is a life of "good works," which God has pre-planned for each person to walk in, directly linking faith to a purposeful life of mission.

REFLECT:

The sermon's final challenge is to "come up out of the water with a mission." The story of the Ethiopian eunuch beautifully illustrates this. After his baptism, Philip was taken away by the Spirit, leaving the eunuch alone, 1,200 miles from home, with no pastor, no church, no small group. Yet, he "went on his way rejoicing," and historical accounts confirm he became the founder of a vital church in Ethiopia. This demonstrates that baptism is not a finish line, but a starting line. It's the doorway to ministry and mission, a public declaration that launches us into the good works God has prepared for us. Just as the eunuch's faith led to a massive geographical and ethnic leap for the gospel, our own commitment to Jesus through baptism should propel us into the unique mission God has for our lives, reminding us that we are created in Christ Jesus to do good works.

APPLY:

Identify one practical way you can live out your faith with a mission today, whether it's by serving someone in need, sharing hope with a friend, or actively seeking opportunities to bless your community.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Gracious Father, we thank you that baptism is a starting line, not a finish line, for a life of purpose. Empower us to come up out of the water with a clear sense of mission, eagerly stepping into the good works you have prepared for us, for your glory.
