What Are You Not Telling Anyone?
OPENING PRAYER:
Lord, you already know what I carry and hide. Meet me in the parts of my life I’ve kept in the dark, not to shame me, but to set me free. Give me the courage to be honest with you, because you already love what you see.
“They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity, for people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.” 2 Peter 2:19 (NIV)
Peter wrote this warning to believers navigating false teachers who preached liberty while quietly enslaving people to their own appetites. It’s a letter about the gap between what looks like freedom and what actually is.
REFLECT:
Pastor Rodney Elliott told a story about a man who walked into his office in tears, a grown man who “looks scared.” The man had been secretly betting on sports for a year. He won big at first, the kind of early win that feels like a green light from God himself, and by the time he sat down across from Rodney, he was seventy-five thousand dollars in debt. His wife didn’t know. His kids didn’t know. And by the end of that story, his wife had divorced him and his kids no longer spoke to him.
Here is the part that should stop us: Rodney said this man loved Jesus and knew his Bible inside and out. He wasn’t some stranger to faith. He was mastered by something while still being a believer, and he carried it alone for a year because shame is very good at convincing us that secrecy is safer than honesty. Peter’s words land hard here: something can promise you freedom (the thrill, the win, the escape) while it is quietly making you a slave. The tragedy in Rodney’s story wasn’t just the money. It was the year of silence before anyone else knew.
If there is something in your life right now that you have never said out loud to another human being, that silence is not protecting you. It’s the very thing keeping you mastered.
APPLY:
Write down, just for your own eyes, the one thing you’ve never told anyone. You don’t have to share it with a group yet. Just stop letting it live only in the dark corner of your own mind. Naming it is the first crack in its power over you.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will choose to honor God by choosing what is beneficial.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Father, thank you for not being afraid of what’s hidden in me. I hand you the thing I’ve been carrying alone. Help me trust that your grace is bigger than my shame, and give me one honest step out of hiding.
PRAYER REQUEST:
