You Are Worth the Gathering

OPENING PRAYER:

Loving God, as we conclude this week, we reflect on the powerful encouragement to gather together. Help us to understand the profound value of meeting with Your people, overcoming our modern excuses and embracing the richness of community that strengthens our faith.

READ: Hebrews 10:24-25 (NLT)

Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near. Hebrews 10:24-25 (NLT)

This passage was written to Jewish Christians who faced immense persecution for their new faith, including excommunication, property loss, imprisonment, and even death. Neglecting to meet together was a tempting way to avoid such severe consequences, making the author's exhortation a radical call to courageous, communal faithfulness.

REFLECT:

The message's discussion of Hebrews 10:24-25 strikes a deep chord, especially when considering the stark contrast between the early church's reasons for neglecting gathering and our own. For them, meeting together could mean losing family, property, or even life; a public declaration of faith sometimes came with severe repercussions. Yet, the author of Hebrews urged them to persist, recognizing the irreplaceable value of mutual encouragement. Now, consider our excuses: "I've had a long weekend," "the kids have ballgames," "I can catch the message later." These are valid concerns, but they pale in comparison to the existential threats faced by the original recipients. The message challenged us directly: "our excuse is the reason that we don't meet together is not nearly as good probably as the book of Hebrews." This isn't about guilt; it's about understanding what you're missing. You are designed for this community. You need the encouragement, the challenge, and the shared presence that only gathering provides. When you choose to "catch the message later," you miss the opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus for someone else, and to receive that same flesh-and-blood love for yourself. This call is for you, because your presence, your input, and your connection are essential for the flourishing of the body of Christ.

APPLY:

Today, make it a point to spend a little extra time with someone in your community; maybe before or after a meeting, event, or gathering. Instead of just saying a quick hello, ask how they’re really doing or share something from your own life. Take a small step to build a real connection, putting your “face-to-face” commitment into practice.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will create space to be face-to-face.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Gracious Father, we thank You for the gift of Your church and the powerful call to gather. Forgive us for our complacency and our easy excuses. Strengthen our resolve to prioritize meeting together, knowing that in community, we find the encouragement and connection necessary to live out our faith with courage and love.

PRAYER REQUEST:

Share your prayer request and pray for others.
