Salt That Leaves the Shaker

OPENING PRAYER:

Jesus, you called your followers salt and light. Search my heart for the places I have hidden. Give me courage to go where you are already at work. Amen.

READ: Matthew 5:13-14, 16 (NIV)

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:13-14, 16 (NIV)

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus describes the identity of those who follow him. Salt preserved and flavored food; light made a dark room livable. Both only do their work when they are in contact with what they are meant to affect.

REFLECT:

Christian reminded us that, in a spiritual sense, followers of Jesus live in Babylon. Our citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20), and the world around us is often dark. That reality can lead us in one of two directions: toward the darkness with the light of Christ, or away from it for our own protection.

Christian was honest that the desire to withdraw usually comes from a good place. Christian community matters deeply. We need people who encourage and challenge us. But he warned that we can build such a complete bubble (church, Bible study, Christian music, Christian events) that we start to fear Babylon will pop it. He was careful to say he is not against private school or homeschooling. His concern is the pull to withdraw from the communities God has given us. Withdrawal is the path of least resistance.

Salt does nothing in the shaker. Light does nothing under a bowl. Christian shared that his own kids have faced conversations far earlier than he expected, a real cost of living in a broken world. Yet presence is how Jesus chose to work, and it is how he still works through us. The people in our schools and neighborhoods are not the enemy. They are the very people Jesus sends his salt and light toward.

APPLY:

Where have you pulled back from people because engaging felt risky, uncomfortable, or tiring? Identify one relationship outside your usual Christian circles and take one small step toward it, such as an invitation, a conversation, or an offer to help.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will pray for one school by name and encourage one person in it this week.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Father, thank you for the gift of Christian community. Let it fuel me, not hide me. Shake me out of the shaker and set my light on a stand, so that others may see your goodness and give you glory. Amen.

PRAYER REQUEST:

Share your prayer request and pray for others.
