The Dangerous Prayer

OPENING PRAYER:

Father, I come to you honestly. Some of my prayers have been more about my comfort than your character. Make me brave enough to pray the prayers that change me. Amen.

READ: Romans 5:3-5 (NIV)

Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. Romans 5:3-5 (NIV)

Paul writes to believers in Rome who knew hardship firsthand. Rather than promising escape from suffering, he describes what God produces through it: endurance, proven character, and a hope that does not disappoint.

REFLECT:

Christian named a brokenness that lives in all of us. We believe God’s job is to make our lives better, and so our prayers sound like this: “God, take me out of this situation. Remove this barrier. Open this door.” Those are honest prayers, and God welcomes them. But Christian pointed out that we rarely pray the dangerous ones: “God, would you keep me low? Would you help me understand what you are trying to teach me in this difficult season? Would you show me more of who you are through what I am living through?”

When we tie God’s goodness to our circumstances, every hard season starts to feel like evidence that God has stepped away. But Scripture tells a different story. Paul could glory in suffering, not because he enjoyed pain, but because he trusted what God was building through it. Perseverance. Character. Hope. None of those grow in a life where every obstacle is immediately removed.

Following Jesus does make life better. Christian was clear about that. But better does not always mean easier. Sometimes the greatest gift God gives is not a way out, but a deeper knowledge of himself in the middle of the very thing we wanted gone.

APPLY:

Choose one circumstance you have been asking God to remove. Alongside that request, pray one dangerous prayer each day this week: “God, what are you teaching me here? Show me more of your character through this.” Journal anything you notice.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will pray for one school by name and encourage one person in it this week.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Lord, I still bring you my requests, and I trust you hear them. But I also ask for more of you. Keep me low enough to learn, and let my hard seasons become places where your love is poured into my heart. Amen.

PRAYER REQUEST:

Share your prayer request and pray for others.
