Created for Good Works

OPENING PRAYER:

Lord, awaken in me a deeper understanding of why I exist—not just to receive blessing but to become blessing, not just to be loved but to extend that love into the lives of others. Let me see the good works you've been preparing for me all along.

READ: Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)

"For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)

Paul wrote this letter to the church in Ephesus to remind them of their identity and calling. The Greek word for "workmanship" is poiema—the root of our word "poem." You are God's poem, his masterpiece, his work of art. But here's the stunning part: you weren't created just to be admired. You were created with purpose—for good works that God has already mapped out for your life.

REFLECT:

Pastor Todd Carter quoted this verse to make a point that should reshape how we think about our connection to Jesus: "Our being connected to the vine of Jesus was never meant to be a finish line. It was meant to be a starting line for a life that bears fruit for somebody else." This is where many of us get stuck. We think salvation is the end goal—we get saved, we're connected to Jesus, and now we just wait for heaven. But that's like a branch thinking its only purpose is to be attached to the vine. The attachment is essential, yes, but it's not the point. The point is what happens because you're attached: fruit grows, and that fruit nourishes others.

Todd said something that should serve as a mirror for all of us: "I don't attend church. For me, I'm here so God can use me in somebody else's life. And the reality is that should be true for all of us." That's a fundamentally different posture than most of us bring. We show up asking what we'll get out of it. But what if we showed up asking who God wants to reach through us? What if we came expecting to be the answer to someone else's prayer, the encouragement someone desperately needs, the invitation that changes a life? God didn't connect you to the vine just so you could grow. He connected you so you could produce—so your life could become nourishment for a hungry world. Those good works Paul talks about? They're not random acts of kindness you have to dream up on your own. God prepared them in advance. He's already been arranging opportunities, placing people in your path, giving you specific gifts for specific moments. Your job isn't to create the plan. It's to say yes when you see it.

APPLY:

This weekend, we talked about taking the next step—and sometimes that step is simply getting started. If you've never served at Pathway, or if it's been a while, we'd love to help you find your place. Just open the Pathway App, tap Get Involved, or visit the website at pathwaychurch.com/volunteer to explore where you could jump in. And if you're already serving, here's your challenge this week: invite someone to serve alongside you. Some of the greatest growth happens when we serve together, so don't keep that opportunity to yourself!

CLOSING PRAYER:

God, thank you for creating me with purpose, for preparing good works in advance for me to walk into. Help me stop overthinking and start moving. Give me eyes to see the opportunities you've already placed in front of me, and give me courage to step into them with faith.

PRAYER REQUEST:

Share your prayer request and pray for others.
