The Danger of Looking Healthy
OPENING PRAYER:
God, search my heart and reveal what's true beneath the surface—where I might be growing without producing, consuming without giving, busy without bearing fruit. I want to be more than a branch that just looks healthy from a distance.
"If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." John 15:5b (NIV)
Jesus makes a stark distinction in this passage between being attached to the vine and actually bearing fruit. In the agrarian world of first-century Palestine, everyone understood that not every branch that drew from the vine actually contributed to the harvest. Some branches looked impressive but produced nothing of value.
REFLECT:
Pastor Todd Carter introduced a term that might make us uncomfortable but is worth sitting with: the sucker branch. In gardening, a sucker branch looks healthy from a distance—it's full of leaves, it takes up space, it can even grow faster than fruit-bearing branches. But a trained gardener knows better, because growth isn't the same thing as fruit. These branches shoot up right where the branch meets the trunk, pulling nutrients that were meant for fruit production, but they never produce anything themselves.
Then Todd made a connection that cuts close: "A sucker branch, I think, is a huge phenomenon and dynamic in the American church today." Here's the uncomfortable truth—consumerism has crept into how we approach faith. We come asking, "Did the message speak to me? Did I like the music? Does this church have what I want for my children?" And there's nothing wrong with being spiritually nourished, with being attached to the vine and receiving what we need. But Jesus calls us to more than consumption. He calls us to production. Todd used another vivid image: spiritual constipation—all input, no output. "That's why I think some Christ followers look so unhappy. They are so unhappy because they are spiritually constipated." But when we allow the Holy Spirit to move us toward service, toward using our gifts for someone else, there's joy and growth, because we're finally doing what we were made for.
APPLY:
This weekend, we talked about taking the next step—and sometimes that step is simply getting started. If you've never served at Pathway, or if it's been a while, we'd love to help you find your place. Just open the Pathway App, tap Get Involved, or visit the website at pathwaychurch.com/volunteer to explore where you could jump in. And if you're already serving, here's your challenge this week: invite someone to serve alongside you. Some of the greatest growth happens when we serve together, so don't keep that opportunity to yourself!
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will take one concrete step towards serving or I will invite someone to serve with me.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Father, I don't want to be a branch that only looks healthy from the outside. I don't want to consume spiritual truth without producing spiritual fruit. Move me from spectator to participant, from taker to giver, and fill me with the joy that comes from being used by you.
PRAYER REQUEST:
Share your prayer request and pray for others.
