Roots Before Fruits: The Hidden Strength of Connection
OPENING PRAYER:
Spirit of Christ, draw us close to Your heart. Let us discover the life that flows from abiding deeply in You, and open our eyes to the relationships that nourish our souls.
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."
Jesus, teaching His disciples just before His crucifixion, uses the familiar image of the vine to emphasize the absolute necessity of staying connected to Him for a fruitful, purpose-filled life.
REFLECT:
Pastor Rodney began with a simple but piercing question: “Do you feel like you were made for more?” Drawing from his Kansas upbringing, he described how every stalk of corn is vital for a healthy harvest. Some stalks thrive under the steady flow of irrigation, while others, battered by stress, barely hang on but still manage to produce fruit. The difference is not effort—it’s connection.
He told of a man who, after a decade of church attendance, still felt utterly unknown. How many of us have experienced this—surrounded by people, yet spiritually isolated? Jesus’ metaphor is not about self-reliance but about a living, daily relationship with Him and with one another. The flourishing corn in Rodney’s fields did so because it was connected to what gave it life. Likewise, our spiritual “fruit” is a natural outgrowth of abiding in Christ and engaging with His people.
This week, reflect: Where do your roots truly lie? Are you content with routine, or are you seeking authentic connection—with Christ, and with others? Every harvest begins with a single seed planted in good soil—every fruitful life begins with connection.
APPLY:
Find someone at church you don’t know well. Ask about their story, and listen with genuine curiosity. If you’re already part of a community, invite someone new into your circle—be the “hello” that could change a life.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will take one concrete step towards serving, or I will invite someone to serve with me.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Thank You, Vine of Life, for welcoming us to abide in You. Grow in us the courage to reach out, receive, and remain—so that Your life might flow through us to others.
PRAYER REQUEST:
Share your prayer request and pray for others.

This weekend, we talked about taking the next step—and sometimes that step is simply getting started. If you've never served at Pathway, or if it's been a while, we'd love to help you find your place. Just open the Pathway App, tap Get Involved, or visit the website at pathwaychurch.com/volunteer to explore where you could jump in. And if you're already serving, here's your challenge this week: invite someone to serve alongside you. Some of the greatest growth happens when we serve together, so don't keep that opportunity to yourself!
