Breaking Cycles, Raising Leaders

OPENING PRAYER:

God of generations, You are the One who breaks chains and sets captives free. Give me vision to see beyond immediate needs to the long-term transformation You desire. Help me invest in futures that will outlast my lifetime.

READ: 2 Timothy 2:2 (NIV)

"And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others."

Paul wrote these words to his spiritual son Timothy, articulating a vision for generational multiplication. This wasn't just about passing on information—it was about investing in people who would invest in others, creating a chain of faithful leadership that would extend the gospel's reach far beyond Paul's own ministry. The principle applies not just to teaching but to all forms of spiritual and practical empowerment. 2 Timothy 2:2 (NIV)

REFLECT:

Mary Kamau said something in the message that captures the heart of what Missions of Hope is really about: "These children, their parents never got these opportunities. You'll find when you go to Nanam in Turkana, literally, there is like 100% illiteracy. And so when we educate these children, when you sponsor them, they get these opportunities to be in our school. We are breaking that cycle."

Think about what that means. In Turkana, illiteracy isn't just a personal limitation—it's a generational pattern. Parents who can't read raise children who can't read, who become parents who can't read. Poverty after poverty. Illiteracy after illiteracy. Not knowing Jesus, generation after generation. It's a cycle that seems unbreakable from the inside.

But Mary declared with holy boldness: "Enough is enough, Devil. You must let loose these people." That's not just optimism—that's spiritual warfare. That's understanding that education, nutrition, health care, and the gospel aren't separate battles but one integrated fight against the forces that keep people trapped in generational bondage.

And here's the vision that should capture our imagination: "These children are the ones who are going to become leaders, leaders in their community, leaders in the cities, leaders in our country and any other part of the world where God is going to take them." When you sponsor a child in Nanam or Mathare Valley, you're not just helping one kid get through school. You're investing in a future community leader, a future church planter, a future business owner who will employ others, a future parent who will raise literate children who know Jesus. Look at Esther's story again. She went from never attending school to being one of the top students in high school, earning a full scholarship to college. Now she's working at Missions of Hope's clinic while pursuing her education. She's living with Wallace and Mary. She's not just surviving—she's thriving and positioned to lead. But it doesn't stop with Esther. Her siblings are now in school. Her mother is employed and a believer attending church. The entire family trajectory changed because someone was willing to invest $40 a month in one child's education and holistic care. That's the power of breaking cycles and raising leaders.

The message reminded us that in places like Turkana, girls who don't get an education are often married off at nine or ten years old. Boys who don't go to school go out to raid animals from other communities and risk being killed. Without intervention, the cycle continues. But with a school, with sponsorship, with the gospel—everything changes. Not just for one generation, but for all the generations that follow. This is Paul's vision in 2 Timothy 2:2 lived out in real time. Invest in reliable people who will teach others. Sponsor a child who will become a leader who will transform a community who will raise up the next generation of leaders. It's multiplication, not just addition. It's kingdom math.

Across Pathway this weekend, people are responding by choosing to sponsor a child. At the campuses, there were physical cards available to pick up and fill out. Through this devotional, we're able to provide you with a link that connects you to the very same opportunity.

If you're able and feel led, you can click the link and take that step today: Sponsor a Child Through Missions of Hope International

Maybe your next step is prayer. Maybe it's having a conversation with your family about what God might be stirring in your hearts. Maybe it's going yourself and taking a short-term mission trip. However you respond today, you're part of the story God is writing through Pathway.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Father, You are the God of generations, the One who breaks chains and sets captives free. Thank You for the privilege of being part of breaking cycles of poverty, illiteracy, and spiritual darkness. Help me invest with vision that extends beyond my lifetime, raising up leaders who will raise up leaders. Use my faithfulness to multiply Your kingdom for generations to come. Amen.
