The $40 That Changes Everything
OPENING PRAYER:
Lord, You are the God who multiplies small offerings into abundant provision. Open my eyes to see the extraordinary potential in what seems ordinary. Give me a generous heart that trusts You with what I have.
"Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up, 'Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?' Jesus said, 'Have the people sit down.' There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish."
This familiar miracle reveals Jesus' pattern: He takes what seems insufficient, blesses it, and multiplies it beyond imagination. The boy's lunch wasn't enough to feed five thousand—until Jesus touched it. The miracle wasn't just in the multiplication but in the willingness to offer what little there was.
John 6:8-11 (NIV)
REFLECT:
Pastor Rodney said something in the message that should make us all pause and think: "You think about $40 a month. Let's be honest, we spend more money on that than on our streaming services a month, don't we?" He also mentioned that some of us spend more than that on Starbucks coffee. It's a fair point. Forty dollars doesn't seem like much in our economy—it's a couple of meals out, a few streaming subscriptions, less than many of us spend on coffee in a month.
But in the hands of God, working through Missions of Hope International, $40 a month becomes extraordinary. It provides a child with quality education, two nutritious meals every day, school uniforms, basic medical and dental care, access to a social worker who connects with the family, opportunities for parents to receive economic empowerment training, and most importantly, daily exposure to the gospel of Jesus Christ and a church community.
Rodney shared about his family's experience sponsoring David for ten years. His kids would read David's letters and pray for him every night, calling him "Innocent David." Through that experience, Rodney's children learned that God is for the whole world, that not everyone has the opportunities they have, and they developed generosity and global awareness. So the $40 didn't just change David's life—it changed the hearts of the children who sponsored him. That's the multiplication Jesus does.
The message showed us Cystine's story—a girl born to be a street child, whose mother would search for food on the streets, who sometimes went a whole day without eating. Now she's in school, learning math, eating two meals a day, leading the school music team, and dreaming of becoming a musician. She said, "I feel that like I'm loved. I've see how God is taking me far from the street. Up to now where I am, it's God. Without God, I won't be here." That's what $40 a month looks like when Jesus multiplies it.
Across Pathway this weekend, people are responding by choosing to sponsor a child. At the campuses, there were physical cards available to pick up and fill out. Through this devotional, we're able to provide you with a link that connects you to the very same opportunity.
If you're able and feel led, you can click the link and take that step today:
Sponsor a Child Through Missions of Hope International
Look at your monthly budget. Find $40. Maybe it means one less meal out. Maybe it means canceling a subscription you barely use. Maybe it means making coffee at home a few more times. Then take that $40 and offer it to Jesus through child sponsorship, trusting Him to multiply it in ways you can't imagine. However you respond today, you're part of the story God is writing through Pathway.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Jesus, You are the God who multiplies small offerings into abundant provision. I offer You what seems small in my hands, trusting that in Your hands it becomes enough and more than enough. Give me a generous heart that doesn't calculate cost but celebrates opportunity. Help me see the extraordinary potential in ordinary obedience. Amen.
