Divine Interuptions

OPENING PRAYER:

God, thank You for meeting me in the middle of a full life, just as You met Nicodemus in the middle of the night. Give me an open heart today. Amen.

READ: John 3:1-21 (NLT)

“There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who was a Pharisee. After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. ‘Rabbi,’ he said, ‘we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you.’ Jesus replied, ‘I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.’ ‘What do you mean?’ exclaimed Nicodemus. ‘How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?’ Jesus replied, ‘I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. So don’t be surprised when I say, “You must be born again.” The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.’ ‘How are these things possible?’

Nicodemus asked. Jesus replied, ‘You are a respected Jewish teacher, and yet you don’t understand these things? I assure you, we tell you what we know and have seen, and yet you won’t believe our testimony. But if you don’t believe me when I tell you about earthly things, how can you possibly believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ever gone to heaven and returned. But the Son of Man has come down from heaven. And as Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him will have eternal life.’ For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. ‘There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.’” John 3:1-21 (NLT)

REFLECT:

You're racing through another packed day—meetings, deadlines, endless tasks—when your phone buzzes: "Got a minute? Can I call?" You hesitate. You don't have a minute. But something inside whispers, Say yes. What if the interruption you dread is actually an invitation from God?

In John 3, a prominent Pharisee named Nicodemus comes to Jesus under cover of night—curious, cautious, searching. Jesus could have been preparing for rest. Instead, He gives Nicodemus His full attention. He listens for the real question beneath the words: "Is there more? How do I find it?" Then Jesus dives to the heart: "I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God." It's not the conversation Nicodemus expected—but it was the conversation he needed.

Jesus' interaction with Nicodemus offers a masterclass: He prioritizes the person over His schedule. He listens for the real question. He speaks truth, even when it's challenging. He uses familiar references to bridge to spiritual truth. And He balances challenge and invitation—confronting Nicodemus' thinking while offering breathtaking grace.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16 NIV) Originally, this wasn't a verse on a cardboard sign at a football game. It was whispered to a searching soul in the middle of the night. It was an invitation to transformation.

Nicodemus' journey didn't end with one late-night discussion. That conversation was the beginning of a transformation that eventually led him to stand publicly for Jesus. One conversation can change a life. One interruption can change eternity. When you choose people over plans, you walk in the footsteps of Jesus.

Pray For Your One

  • 1. Ask God to help you hold your schedule loosely today—to be genuinely available if your One reaches out or needs you unexpectedly.
  • 2. Pray that you would recognize when a conversation with your One is shifting toward something deeper, and have the courage to slow down and go there with them.
  • 3. Ask God to make you the kind of person your One would feel safe calling at an unexpected hour—someone they trust with the things that keep them up at night.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will pray and share my life with my One

CLOSING PRAYER:

Lord Jesus, forgive me for the times I've seen people as interruptions instead of invitations. Train my heart to hold space for sacred moments, even when they crash into my plans. Help me to listen for whispers of eternity in the middle of my busy days. Fill me with Your love, patience, and discernment so that I can speak Your truth with grace. Make me ready—at all times—to offer the hope You entrusted to me. Interrupt me for Your glory. I pray in Your name. Amen.

PRAYER REQUEST:

Share your prayer request and pray for others.
