Seasoned to Shine
OPENING PRAYER:
Lord, thank You for a new week. Before I read today, help me come with an expectant heart, ready to be changed by what I hear. Amen.
“You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Matthew 5:13-16 (NLT)
REFLECT:
The San Francisco Chronicle once ran a front-page story about Linda Wilson-Allen, a city bus driver whose love for her passengers made her bus feel like a second home. Linda learned her regulars' names. She waited if someone wasn't quite at the stop. She carried groceries for the elderly. At the end of each route she would smile and say, "I love you. Take care." When a puzzled reporter asked where this extraordinary spirit came from, Linda said, "It starts at 2:30 a.m. when I get down on my knees to pray." She told her pastor: "When I'm driving, I'm ministering. God shows me who needs a little extra care."
This is exactly what Jesus envisioned when He said, "You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world." Notice: Jesus doesn't say, "Try to be salt and light." He says, "You ARE salt. You ARE light." It's not an aspiration—it's our identity. It's the calling of every believer.
Salt works quietly, but its impact is profound. Salt preserves. Salt enhances—it doesn't overpower but draws out the best flavors. Salt creates thirst. And salt must make contact—faith that stays isolated can't transform anything. Light works visibly: it dispels darkness, provides direction, and cannot be hidden.
The ultimate purpose is this: "Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." (v.16, NIV) We don't live salty, radiant lives to be admired—we do it so people are drawn to the Source of our goodness. Our influence should spark wonder not about us, but about Him.
Imagine the ripple effect if ordinary Christians in ordinary places lived this way every day—on buses, in classrooms, in boardrooms, in coffee shops. You are the seasoning. You are the brightness. Don't hide it. Don't lose it. Season. Shine.
APPLY:
PRAY FOR YOUR ONE
- 1. Ask God to show you one specific way this week where you could be "salt and light" in a way that makes your One curious about the source.
- 2. Pray for the courage to stand out when necessary and the humility to ensure God receives the glory when you do.
- 3. Ask God to help you identify any area where you've been "salt in the salt shaker"—keeping your faith contained rather than letting it make contact.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will pray and share my life with my One
CLOSING PRAYER:
Father, thank You for declaring that I am salt and light in this world. Forgive me for the times I've hidden my light or lost my saltiness by blending in with the world around me. Help me live with such authentic love and integrity that others are drawn to You. Give me courage to stand out when necessary and humility to ensure You receive the glory. In Jesus' name, amen.
