The Gospel You Live
OPENING PRAYER:
Father, thank You for meeting me here again. Search my heart and prepare me to receive whatever You have for me today. Amen.
“Dear friends, I warn you as ‘temporary residents and foreigners’ to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls. Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world. For the Lord’s sake, submit to all human authority—whether the king as head of state, or the officials he has appointed. For the king has sent them to punish those who do wrong and to honor those who do right. It is God’s will that your honorable lives should silence those ignorant people who make foolish accusations against you. For you are free, yet you are God’s slaves, so don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do evil. Respect everyone, and love the family of believers. Fear God, and respect the king.” 1 Peter 2:11-17 (NLT)
REFLECT:
In a world flooded with empty words, people crave authenticity. They look past what we say to how we actually live. Peter offers a radical strategy: "Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world." (1 Peter 2:11-12 NLT) What if people's main obstacle to believing in Jesus isn't intellectual doubt—but the disconnect between our message and our lifestyle?
Jennifer Fulwiler wasn't merely indifferent to Christianity—she was convinced it was intellectually bankrupt. What changed her mind? Not arguments, but authenticity. When she was overwhelmed with a newborn, her Christian neighbor Julie stepped in—not trying to convert her, just showing up with meals, offering to help, and listening. Julie's consistent care earned her the right to gently challenge Jennifer's assumptions. Eventually Jennifer came to believe in Jesus.
Lifestyle witness works in at least three ways: it sparks curiosity (when you respond to hardship with peace or forgive the unforgivable, people notice), it builds credibility (words carry weight when backed by character), and it makes the gospel attractive (a life of quiet integrity is not just right—it's compelling).
Before people consider Christianity's truth claims, they want to see that it leads to a life worth living. Your neighbor is unlikely to consider Jesus seriously until they've seen His impact in you. The Testimony of small things: returning extra change when a cashier makes a mistake. Patience in frustrating situations. Generosity beyond obligation. Forgiveness when wronged.
Peter gives a charge later in his letter: "If someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it." Notice the order: first, a life that provokes questions. Then, the opportunity to give an answer. If no one is asking about your hope, your life might not be displaying it.
APPLY:
PRAY FOR YOUR ONE
- 1. Ask God to reveal any gap between what you say you believe and how you actually live—especially in places where your One can observe you.
- 2. Pray that your life would create spiritual curiosity in your One—that they would notice something different about you and eventually want to know why.
- 3. Ask God to position you as a trusted presence in your "one's" life, so that when hard seasons hit, you're one of the first people they turn to.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will pray and share my life with my One
CLOSING PRAYER:
Father, thank You for the privilege of representing You through my everyday life. Forgive me for the moments my words and actions haven't lined up. Help me live with such honesty and integrity that people can't help but wonder where my hope comes from. Let my life make the gospel believable before I ever have to explain it. In Jesus' name, amen.
PRAYER REQUEST:
Share your prayer request and pray for others.
