The Engagement Pathway

OPENING PRAYER:

Lord, thank You for another day and another chance to grow closer to You. Help me slow down long enough to really hear what You want to say. Amen.

READ: Luke 19:1-10 (NLT)

“Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town. There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich. He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way. When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. ‘Zacchaeus!’ he said. ‘Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.’ Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy. But the people were displeased. ‘He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,’ they grumbled. Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, ‘I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!’ Jesus responded, ‘Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.’ Luke 19:1-10 (NLT)

REFLECT:

Have you noticed how some conversations remain perpetually shallow while others dive into life's deepest waters? The difference rarely happens by accident. Meaningful connection follows a strategic progression—an engagement pathway—that moves from surface-level exchanges to heart-level sharing.

In today's passage, Jesus masterfully demonstrates this with Zacchaeus. Instead of preaching at him, Jesus says, "I must be a guest in your home today"—an invitation to shared time and deeper relationship. He doesn't begin with Zacchaeus' sins or a theological lecture. He creates relational space through a shared meal. The result? "Salvation has come to this home today."

Think of relationship development as a strategic pathway with three distinct stages: Stage 1—Casual Contact, where conversations revolve around surface topics. Stage 2—Meaningful Dialogue, where trust builds and conversations shift toward values and opinions. Stage 3—Spiritual Conversations, where faith and ultimate questions can be explored naturally.

Most relationships get stuck at Stage 1. We exchange pleasantries with neighbors, discuss sports with coworkers, and never venture deeper. But genuine influence grows as we intentionally build trust and journey through all three stages.

The secret to guiding conversations forward? Thoughtful questions. To move from Stage 1 to Stage 2, try: "What drew you to that career or hobby?" "What do you enjoy most about that?" These questions signal genuine interest and create space for deeper connection without forcing the conversation.

The goal isn't merely to create an opportunity to speak about Jesus—it's to embody His patient, respectful love in the process. When we do, we don't just make the gospel plausible; we make its power visible in the way we relate to others.

APPLY:

PRAY FOR YOUR ONE

  • 1. Ask God to show you what "stage" your relationship with your One is in, and what next step might naturally move it deeper.
  • 2. Pray for a specific opportunity this week to move your relationship with your One one stage deeper—through a question, an invitation, or a shared experience.
  • 3. Ask for the patience to build trust at your "one's" pace rather than rushing toward the spiritual conversation you want to have.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will pray and share my life with my one.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Father, help me walk with people at their pace, loving them as You do. Teach me patience in building trust and wisdom in knowing when to speak. Forgive me for wanting to rush to the gospel before I've earned the right to be heard. May my relationships reflect Your grace—and may those I engage experience Your love through me. In Your name. Amen.

PRAYER REQUEST:

Share your prayer request and pray for others.
