The Ministry Of The Table
OPENING PRAYER:
God, on this day of rest and worship, thank You for inviting me back to this time of prayer. Prepare my heart before I read and pray today. Amen.
“Later, as Jesus left the town, he saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at his tax collector’s booth. ‘Follow me and be my disciple,’ Jesus said to him. So Levi got up, left everything, and followed him. Later, Levi held a banquet in his home with Jesus as the guest of honor. Many of Levi’s fellow tax collectors and other guests also ate with them. But the Pharisees and their teachers of religious law complained bitterly to Jesus’ disciples, ‘Why do you eat and drink with such scum?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.’” Luke 5:27-32 (NLT)
REFLECT:
Think about the best meal you've ever had—not just the food, but the whole experience. Who was there? What made it memorable? Scripture records one such meal in Luke 5 - a banquet where Jesus was the guest of honor, filled with tax collectors, sinners, and outsiders. The Pharisees were horrified. But Jesus wasn't concerned with appearances. He came for the people who knew they needed Him.
For Jesus, the dinner table wasn't just for eating. It was for loving, listening, and transforming lives. "Healthy people don't need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent." (Luke 5:31-32)
Rosaria Butterfield was a tenured professor and outspoken critic of Christianity. When Pastor Ken Smith read one of her articles, instead of firing back, he wrote her a kind letter—inviting her to dinner. When she arrived, there was no fight, no agenda, no evangelistic ambush. Just warmth, curiosity, and kindness. Over the course of many meals and deep conversations, her heart softened. Eventually she came to Jesus. It all started with an invitation to dinner.
Hospitality isn't about impressing people with Pinterest-worthy meals. It's about making space and inviting people in. You don't need all the answers. You don't need a perfectly clean house. You just have to be willing to open your door.
Jesus was called "a friend of tax collectors and sinners"—and He wore it proudly. Relationships are the bridge where grace walks in. So, who will you invite this week? Whose life might be changed—simply because you made room at your table?
PRAY FOR
APPLY:
PRAY FOR YOUR ONE
- 1. Ask God who you could invite to share a meal—specifically someone in your life who doesn't yet know Jesus.
- 2. Pray for the courage to open your home or your table, even if it feels inconvenient or imperfect.
- 3. Ask God to make your home, your car, your regular coffee shop—any space where you gather—a place where barriers fall and people feel drawn toward Him.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will pray and share my life with my one.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Father, thank You for Jesus, who welcomed those the world rejected. Forgive me for keeping my distance—whether out of fear, judgment, or distraction. Give me courage to open my table as a doorway to Your love. Help me see each meal as ministry, each seat as sacred. May my home be a place where barriers fall, stories are shared, and hearts are drawn to You. Use me to introduce others to Jesus—not through arguments, but through friendship and welcome. In His name, amen
