The Heart For The One

OPENING PRAYER:

God, thank You for never giving up on any of us. Help me see people the way You see them. Soften my heart before I even begin to pray. Amen.

READ: Luke 15:1-7 (NLT)

“Tax collectors and other notorious sinners often came to listen to Jesus teach. This made the Pharisees and teachers of religious law complain that he was associating with such sinful people—even eating with them! So Jesus told them this story: ‘If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them gets lost, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others in the wilderness and go to search for the one that is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he will joyfully carry it home on his shoulders. When he arrives, he will call together his friends and neighbors, saying, “Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.” In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven’t strayed away!’” Luke 15:1-7 (NLT)

REFLECT:

In a world obsessed with numbers, Jesus tells a story that makes no sense—unless you understand the math of love. A shepherd leaves 99 percent of his flock to search for a single lost sheep. Why? Because Jesus isn't speaking the language of efficiency; He's speaking the language of love. And love has always been terrible at math. We see this individual focus throughout Scripture: God calls to Adam in the cool of the garden. Jesus stops for blind Bartimaeus despite pressing crowds. The Creator of galaxies counts every hair on your head. In heaven's mathematics, you are never just one among many—you are the one worth everything.

The principle of "stopping for the one" challenges how we approach evangelism. Our culture values scale, efficiency, and metrics. We celebrate reaching thousands while often missing the person right in front of us. But what if our primary call isn't to reach the masses but to notice the individual God has placed in our path? This shift changes everything: from general to specific, from programs to relationships, from hurry to presence. Who has God placed in your life that needs to experience His love through you? Identifying your One focuses your immediate attention where God is already working.

Your role isn't to save anyone—that's God's work. Your role is to participate in His search-and-rescue operation, to be His hands and feet to the one He's already pursuing. Today, ask yourself: Who is my One?

APPLY:

PRAY FOR YOUR ONE

  • 1. Spend time asking God to put a specific name on your heart—your One. If you already have a name, pray for them by name today.
  • 2. Ask God to break your heart for what breaks His regarding your One—to give you His love and compassion for them.
  • 3. Pray for one practical opportunity to "stop" for your One this week—a text, a conversation, a meal, or a moment of presence.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will pray and share my life with my one.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Father, thank You for being the God who leaves the ninety-nine to find the one. Thank You for pursuing me by name, and loving me more than I could ever earn. Open my eyes to see who You're asking me to pursue. Give me courage to step out, patience to keep going, and joy to celebrate every step they take toward You. In Jesus' name, amen.

PRAYER REQUEST:

Share your prayer request and pray for others.
