False Narratives in the Dark
OPENING PRAYER:
Faithful God, shine Your light into the dark places where my mind writes stories that aren't true. Help me recognize the voice of the enemy and cling instead to the truth of who You are and what You've promised.
"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34 (NIV)
Jesus concludes His teaching on anxiety with a jarring statement that sounds almost discouraging at first. He's speaking to disciples who will soon face persecution, loss, and uncertainty. His words aren't meant to minimize their struggles but to redirect their focus from imagined futures to present faithfulness.
REFLECT:
Pastor Rodney Elliott described something many of us have experienced but rarely name: lying awake at night, mind racing, playing the "what if" game. He confessed that after his father died, he would wake up in darkness and it felt like Satan was right there, attacking him, writing false narratives about the future. The uncertainty of his changed world, no father to call, no son at home, everything familiar suddenly unfamiliar, bled into every thought. His mind would spiral, imagining worst-case scenarios that hadn't happened and likely never would.
This is what uncertainty does to us. When we know things are stable, we assume tomorrow will be okay, and the day after that. But when life shifts dramatically, our minds assume tomorrow won't be okay, and neither will the next day, and neither will the day after that. We dream up narratives about people, about ourselves, about our futures, and anxiety feeds on these stories we tell ourselves in the dark. Jesus knew this tendency. That's why His instruction is so pointed: don't let tomorrow's imagined troubles ruin the actual life you're living right now. Rodney admitted that anxiety had ruined his present because he was so consumed with worrying about the future. He'd lie on the couch, exhausted and lost, unable to engage with his daughter who just wanted her dad back. The false narratives had such power that they stole not just his peace about tomorrow but his ability to live in the present moment.

APPLY:
The next time you find yourself spiraling into "what if" thinking, pause and write down the narrative your mind is creating. Then beside it, write what you actually know to be true right now, not what might happen, but what is real in this present moment. Ask God to help you distinguish between the enemy's lies and reality. Consider memorizing Matthew 6:34 so you can speak it aloud when anxiety starts writing false stories in your mind.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will build my weekly rhythm of certainty.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, You know how quickly my mind can spin into fear and worst-case scenarios. Thank You for the reminder that most of what I worry about never comes to pass. Help me live faithfully in the present rather than being paralyzed by imagined futures. Replace the enemy's lies with Your truth.
