An Apple Isn’t for the Tree: Fruitfulness Beyond Ourselves

OPENING PRAYER:

Holy Spirit, guide my heart to see beyond my own needs. Help me recognize the ways You are calling me to be a blessing for others, as Christ has been for me.

READ: John 15:8 (NIV)

"This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples."

Jesus, preparing His disciples for His departure, uses the imagery of the vine and branches to illustrate the purpose and evidence of true discipleship—bearing fruit for the Father’s glory.

REFLECT:

Pause for a moment and picture an apple tree, heavy with fruit. The tree’s branches stretch outward, offering apples to anyone who passes by. It never takes from its own bounty. That image, so ordinary, holds a deep truth about how God designed our spiritual lives. In Pastor Rodney’s message, he asked us to consider: Who is your fruit for? It’s tempting to think that all our growth—our time in prayer, our learning, even our blessings—are for our own benefit. But Jesus says, “By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples.”

This message challenges the inward, self-focused version of faith. Pastor Rodney pointed to the volunteers who sacrificed their own vacation time to serve students at camp. Why? Because they believe God made them to bear fruit for others. Their joy comes from seeing others grow. Your faith, too, was never meant to stay private, bottled up, or hidden beneath routines. The evidence of salvation, the proof that Jesus lives in you, is that your life nourishes others—sometimes in ways you may never see. You were made for more than spiritual self-care. God’s calling is this: Let your fruit feed the world.

APPLY:

This weekend, we talked about taking the next step—and sometimes that step is simply getting started. If you've never served at Pathway, or if it's been a while, we'd love to help you find your place. Just open the Pathway App, tap Get Involved, or visit the website at pathwaychurch.com/volunteer to explore where you could jump in. And if you're already serving, here's your challenge this week: invite someone to serve alongside you. Some of the greatest growth happens when we serve together, so don't keep that opportunity to yourself!

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will take one concrete step towards serving, or I will invite someone to serve with me.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Thank You, Lord, for inviting me to bear fruit that brings life to others. Teach me to give freely, as You have given to me. Help me see those who need Your love through me.

PRAYER REQUEST:

Share your prayer request and pray for others.
