Producers and Consumers: When Faith Gets Up Off the Couch

OPENING PRAYER:

Spirit of God, awaken in me a holy restlessness. Move me from passivity to the purposeful action of love.

READ: Matthew 7:16 (NIV)

“By their fruit you will recognize them.” Matthew 7:16 (NIV)

Jesus warns against false prophets, teaching that genuine discipleship is revealed not by appearance or words but by the fruit of one’s life.

REFLECT:

Let’s be honest—sometimes it’s easier to sit back and wait for someone else to step up. Pastor Rodney’s story about his children waiting for someone to get the fruit out of the fridge, even though the light comes on and everything is ready, is painfully familiar. We do the same thing in spiritual life, don’t we? We go through the motions, show up on Sunday, but by Tuesday, our faith is on “pause.” We hope someone else will lead, someone else will serve, someone else will love the neighbor.

But Jesus’s words in Matthew 7:16 cut through our excuses: “By their fruit you will recognize them.” The world is watching not for our attendance, but for our action. What sets apart a disciple of Jesus is a willingness to move—out of comfort, into service; out of routine, into risk. Pastor Rodney urged us to see that the “checkbox” version of faith isn’t enough. The life Jesus offers is lived on the field, not the sidelines. Ask yourself: Am I a consumer, always waiting? Or a producer, stepping up even when no one else does? God’s call is not passive. It’s a holy invitation to rise up, get your hands dirty, and make His love real in a world hungry for hope.

APPLY:

This weekend, we talked about taking the next step—and sometimes that step is simply getting started. If you've never served at Pathway, or if it's been a while, we'd love to help you find your place. Just open the Pathway App, tap Get Involved, or visit the website at pathwaychurch.com/volunteer to explore where you could jump in. And if you're already serving, here's your challenge this week: invite someone to serve alongside you. Some of the greatest growth happens when we serve together, so don't keep that opportunity to yourself!

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will take one concrete step towards serving, or I will invite someone to serve with me.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Jesus, thank You for not waiting on the sidelines but moving toward the cross for me. Give me courage to move from consuming to producing, and to be Your hands and feet wherever You send me.

PRAYER REQUEST:

Share your prayer request and pray for others.
