The Vine, the Branch, and the Cost of Love

OPENING PRAYER:

Father, shape my heart to remain rooted in Your love. Show me what it means to abide in You and let Your love flow through my life.

READ: John 15:9-10 (NIV)

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.” John 15:9-10 (NIV)

In His final discourse, Jesus presents abiding in love as both privilege and command, rooted in His relationship with the Father.

REFLECT:

What does it really mean to “remain” in Jesus? Pastor Rodney led us deep into John 15, where Jesus uses the ancient image of the vine and branches. We love the idea of being connected to Christ, of drawing life from Him. But Jesus then gets specific: “If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love… My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.”

This isn’t a surface-level, feel-good love. The Greek word “agape” means a sacrificial, self-emptying love—the kind that goes to the cross. Pastor Rodney reminded us that real love costs something. It’s no accident Jesus spoke these words just before He laid down His very life. To remain in Jesus is to walk the path of self-denial, to let His love flow through us even when it’s inconvenient, costly, or hard. We love because He first loved us, and His love wasn’t a slogan; it was a cross. If you want to know whether you’re really connected to Christ, look at the fruit: Is your love costly? Is it for others? This is the love that changes the world, and it’s what you were made to give.

APPLY:

This weekend, we talked about taking the next step—and sometimes that step is simply getting started. If you've never served at Pathway, or if it's been a while, we'd love to help you find your place. Just open the Pathway App, tap Get Involved, or visit the website at pathwaychurch.com/volunteer to explore where you could jump in. And if you're already serving, here's your challenge this week: invite someone to serve alongside you. Some of the greatest growth happens when we serve together, so don't keep that opportunity to yourself!

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will take one concrete step towards serving, or I will invite someone to serve with me.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Lord, thank You for Your sacrificial love poured out for me. Help me remain in Your love, even when it’s costly, so that my life bears fruit for Your glory.

PRAYER REQUEST:

Share your prayer request and pray for others.
